One of the first settlers to the area, John Constantine Williams, relocated here from Detroit, Michigan due to health issues. Williams purchased thousands of acres in St. Petersburg but lived in Tampa until 1887. A Russian gentleman by the name of Peter Demens offered to extend his Orange Belt Railroad along the coast into Williams’s settlement in return for part of Williams land. As part of this agreement, Demens was entitled to name the land. Demens chose the name St. Petersburg in honor of his homeland. Ironically, Williams died in 1892 which was the same year that St. Petersburg, Florida was incorporated. In 1909, the first direct train came from New York City, and with the improved roads, increased travel and the warm Florida weather, many of them stayed. St. Petersburg became one of Florida’s first cities to survive the real estate rise and fall of the 1920's. In 1921 a major hurricane hit St. Petersburg and despite the damage, the population kept rising. In 1924, the bridge connecting St. Petersburg to Tampa was finished; the Gandy Bridge would alleviate the need for ferries and shortened the travel time to and from Tampa.

Pinellas Trail is a 47 mile hiking/biking trail that is considered the "longest urban linear trail in the Eastern U.S". This trail provides exercise, glorious sunshine and opportunities to observe the delicate environment that is still residing in Florida. St. Petersburg is home to The Devil Rays, a Major League Baseball Team that resides at Tropicana Field. The St. Petersburg pier offers a vast array of restaurants, shops and a magnificent sea aquarium.
